Chardham, often referred to as the “Char Dham Yatra,” is a sacred pilgrimage circuit in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. The term “Chardham” translates to “four abodes” and represents four significant religious sites that hold immense spiritual significance in Hinduism. These four sites include Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath.The Chardham Yatra is not just a physical journey but also a spiritual one. Pilgrims believe that undertaking this journey can cleanse them of their sins and lead them toward salvation (moksha). The yatra usually takes place during the warmer months, between April/May and October/November, when the weather is more suitable for travel.

Badrinath

Badrinath is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is situated in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. It lies at an elevation of about 3,133 meters (10,279 feet). The Badrinath temple is a significant part of the Chardham Yatra and attracts a large number of pilgrims seeking blessings from Lord Vishnu.

Kedarnath

Kedarnath is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas (lingams of light) of Lord Shiva and holds immense importance for devotees of Lord Shiva. It is located at an elevation of around 3,583 meters (11,755 feet). The temple is nestled in the Himalayas near the Mandakini River and is accessible through a challenging trek.

Gangotri

Gangotri is the origin of the holy Ganges River, known as the Ganga in India. The Gangotri temple, dedicated to Goddess Ganga, is perched at an altitude of about 3,100 meters (10,200 feet). Devotees believe that taking a dip in the freezing waters of the Ganges here washes away their sins.

Yamunotri

This is the source of the Yamuna River, one of the major rivers in India. The Yamunotri temple is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna and is situated at an elevation of around 3,293 meters (10,804 feet) in the Garhwal Himalayas. Pilgrims visit the temple to take a dip in the natural thermal springs and offer prayers to the goddess.
