Monsoon (July to September)in Kedarnath

How to reach Kedarnath

The monsoon floods of 2013 washed off the traditional six-hour trip from Gaurikund to Kedarnath, which ran through Rambara and GarurChatti. Since then, personnel of the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) and the Indian Army have constructed a new 14-kilometre path from Gaurikund.

This hike ascends via Jangal Chatti, Chhoti Linchuli, and Badi Linchuli before crossing the Mandakini River and continuing to the south face of the Kedarnath peak is approximately 4 kilometres away. Another path climbs up to Kedarnath from Sonprayag, about 5 kilometres south of Gaurikund, via Gomkara, Dev Vishnu, and Dhumgajgiri.

By air: Dehradun’s Jolly Grant Airport is the closest civil airport to Kedarnath. The airport is around 250 kilometres from Kedarnath and serves major Indian cities such as New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Chennai. There are frequent flights from all of these locations, and after you get in Jolly Grant, you can hire a bus or a cab to take you to Kedarnath, or more specifically, Gaurikund, which is about 14 kilometres from Kedarnath.

By road: You can take a bus from New Delhi to Dehradun, which is roughly 250 kilometres distant. These buses can be boarded at either Anand Vihar Bus Terminus or Kashmere Gate Bus Terminus, the two major interstate bus terminals serving Dehradun regularly. It would be best if you took a bus to Kedarnath from Dehradun.

By rail: The nearest rail station to Kedarnath is Haridwar Railway Station. Haridwar receives trains from all of the country’s major metros, including Kolkata, New Delhi, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Varanasi, to name a few. Some popular trains on the route include the Jan Shatabdi Express, Mussoorie Express, and AC Special Express.
